What are Qualitative Research Methods?
The qualitative approach to research in the social sciences ranges from conducting personal interviews to studying entire towns and cities. This approach combines a variety of methods and starting points to examine and draw inferences from the social world we live in. In this workshop we will be learning about development sector qualitative research and managing a research team on the field.

How do we teach Qualitative Research?
The workshop will provide participants with hands-on experience in working and engaging with a range of Qualitative Research Methods in a simple yet practical manner. Practice scenarios as well as anecdotes from the field will be used to help with building qualitative skills and techniques. Participants can also gain insights into managing a research team on the field, navigating ethical concerns while conducting research, and look at research during COVID-19 in India. The workshop will provide insights into qualitative research strategy for academics and for development professionals and researchers.
Resource Persons:
Suveera Venkatesh, Development Professional, Analyst at Dasra, Mumbai
Suveera has a Master’s degree in Social Work (Women Centered Practices) from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and an undergraduate degree in sociology from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She has worked with development-based organizations such as Area Networking and Development Initiatives (ANANDI), Gujarat and in the capacity of a Knowledge Consultant with UNICEF, India. She currently works as an Analyst at DASRA, where she contributes to the program development of their 10to19 Dasra Adolescent Collaborative Program aimed at improving outcomes for adolescent and young people’s health and well-being in India.
Vedika Inamdar, Research Author, Monk® Prayogshala®
Vedika has a Master’s degree in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex (UK) and an undergraduate degree in sociology from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She has worked with development-based organisations such as Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) and Samhita Social Ventures. She is currently a Research Author at the Department of Sociology, Monk® Prayogshala® where she contributes to writing research papers, grants, and conducting capacity-building sessions.
Eligibility
Undergraduates, postgraduates, PhD scholars or professionals pursuing research in the social sciences (Psychology, Economics and/or Sociology) or any person with basic understanding and interest in qualitative research methods and development sector research. Prior knowledge about research methods and design would be helpful.
Course Requirements
A laptop with operating system up to or above Windows XP, or Mac OS X and a stable internet connection with working microphone and web camera.
